British Virgin Islands

Idyllic Conditions for Novices and
Seasoned Sailors

Why is the BVI a perfect place to learn to sail? Constant 10 to 20-knot trade winds fill your mainsail. The Sir Francis Drake Channel stretches out before of you, offering deep-water passages in every direction. And whether you’re a first-time sailor or an experienced captain, the BVI greets you with turquoise waters, plenty of 75-88°F sunshine year-round, and an inviting blue sky.

The British Virgin Islands are a sailor's paradise – you can set sail each day and never be more than few miles from another island. You'll navigate easily using line-of sight-navigation, as you set your course for countless scenic anchorages with an abundance of shoreside diversions.

BVI sailing is not only fun and relaxing, but healthy for your soul. When class is over each day, you'll still have time for fun and adventure exploring sandy beaches, lush greenery and crystal-clear waters. From the main capital island of Tortola, sailors have incredible variety in a cruising area that is about 32 miles long and 15 miles wide.

Your package includes accommodations at the Mariner Inn, dockside at The Moorings base. Following a $10 million renovation, the island-style rooms are spacious; there's a delightful pool, lovely outdoor restaurant and bar, and all the excitement of being surrounded by sailors and Moorings yachts.

As part of this expansion, a new environmentally responsible breakwater has been built to provide a waterfront area on the main harbor. It is the most environmentally friendly charter facility in the Caribbean, if not the world, and is at the forefront of modern marina design.

The highlight of your Learn to Sail week is an all day practice sail to Cooper Island, just across the Sir Francis Drake Channel. You'll enjoy a lively sail to windward followed by a relaxing beachside lunch and a peaceful return with the wind at your back. As you enter the harbor for the final time, you'll be buoyed by a rewarding sense of accomplishment and the excitement of a lifetime of sailing that lies ahead.

If you're in the Live Aboard Cruising Course you'll spend your first night ashore before setting sail, and at the end of your course another night at the resort to unwind and celebrate the accomplishments of your week under sail. Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, Norman Island, the Baths and Cooper Island are just a few of the spectacular islands you'll visit and explore during your week in paradise.

Whichever course you choose (and we highly recommend Fast Track to Cruising® for an unparalleled island experience) you're about to embark on a lifestyle to cherish with family and friends. Spend a week with Offshore in the British Virgin Islands and gain the confidence to start seeing the world under sail!

Located approximately 1200 miles ESE of Miami, airline carriers such as American, United and Delta provide service to the Virgin Islands. You can get a direct flight from many U.S. cities into San Juan, Puerto Rico, then take a 45-minute commuter flight into Beef Island, Tortola.

Another option is flying into St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and jumping on the ferry for a 45-minute boat ride to Tortola where you can catch a taxi to your hotel. If you're arriving late, check ferry schedules before you leave to be sure you can make the last one of the day!
